A Discussion on Assisted Dying
Proposals to give terminally ill people in England and Wales the right to choose to end their life are to be introduced in Parliament this month. Labour MP Kim Leadbeater is putting forward the bill and said “now is the time” to hold a fresh debate on assisted dying, after MPs rejected a bill on the issue in 2015. This time it looks like it has a chance of succeeding.
But the details are important. What are the criteria for suitability? What protections will there be for the vulnerable? What should be the role of doctors? How are hospices involved?
We all have views, and many have experience of losing a close friend or relative who lived in misery at the end of their life. Would the proposed law help in those circumstances?
